The Indiana House of Representatives passed a new bill in February affecting state casinos. Under Senate Bill 163, parents who owe child support will have to pay up before they can receive their earning at casinos in the state.
Indiana’s delinquency is over $2.2 billion statewide. It ranks 41st in success rates at child-support collections by collecting only 58 percent of the money owed.
Rep. Trent Van Haaften, D-Mount Vernon said, “It’s just another way to ensure that if you plant a seed, you tend the garden.”
To tend to this, slot winnings will be intercepted at $1,200 and a person will have to be at least $2,000 in debt.
Indiana is also at the forefront in family and education initiatives. Other bills in the running are:
- Senate Bill 175 which would prohibit smoking in all public places except at any in-state casino.
- House Bill 1001 would require lawmakers to wait at least one year before becoming lobbyists.
- Allowing juvenile judges to send delinquents out of state for rehabilitation if the costs don’t exceed those for an in-state facility
- Multiple local bills including moving school board elections from the spring to the general elections beginning in 2012
- This most likely will not stop parents from going to places such as Caesars online
