From groceries to textbooks to dorm room appliances, the list of college expenses goes way beyond tuition. But between learning to navigate a sprawling campus and finalizing a class schedule, watching how much they spend is generally a low priority for college freshmen.
Carpenters have difficult jobs. They work hard, and they can struggle with injuries and other problems that wouldn’t necessarily plague someone with a desk job. They also see huge rewards. Many of them are paid quite well for their skills, but they also see rewards that have nothing to do with money. To many of them, there’s nothing like the satisfaction of a job well-done. The smell of the wood, the feel of it in their hands, and the strength and ability to take sticks of lumber and make something beautiful–those things can have deep meaning and be hard to beat.
